John May has been a leader in mobilizing private equity capital and has more than 15 years of experience with venture funds. May was a founder of New Vantage Group, a firm that innovatively mobilizes private equity into early-stage companies and provides advisory services to both funds and angel "clubs." May is managing general partner of Calvert Social Venture Partners, LP, a Washington, D.C.-based venture capital firm. He is also an adviser to and a member of the Investment Committee of the Women's Growth Capital Fund, LP. In 1991, May co-founded the Investors' Circle, a national nonprofit group of 150 family and institutional investors. Additionally in 1996, he co-founded and became executive director of the Private Investors Network, an angel network sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic Venture Association. He sits on several boards of directors of nonprofits, such as Students for Responsible Business, the Institute for Educational Leadership, First Tuesday of Washington, D.C., and two university incubators. May currently serves as a Batten Fellow, lecturing, conducting research, and consulting on angel investing at Darden and the Law School.
